Rita Wilson reflects on music and personal growth with new album
Rita Wilson recently marked her 70th birthday with deep reflections on life, loss, and her musical journey. The Hollywood actress, producer, and now singer-songwriter has released her latest album, Sound of a Woman, which encapsulates her experiences and explores themes of femininity and self-discovery, reports BritPanorama.
The occasion was particularly poignant for Wilson, who has found each birthday reminds her of her mother, Dorothy Wilson, who passed away in 2014. “My mum was my best friend,” Wilson shared, emphasizing the significance of celebrating the life and influence of motherhood on birthdays.
Wilson recounted a touching story about her grandmother, illustrating the enduring connections families share even after loss. Through this lens, her album’s highlight, “Your Mother,” reflects on parenthood and a woman’s identity beyond that role. This emotionally charged narrative flows throughout the album, marking her sixth release, which blends country influences with personal storytelling.
The album is described as a semi-conceptual suite that chronicles a woman’s life journey, addressing young love, loss, and the pursuit of self-acceptance. “I wanted to explore different experiences that women have over the course of their lives. This is just the tip of the iceberg,” Wilson stated, presenting a vision that resonates with many female listeners.
Wilson drew inspiration from a personal quote attributed to Michelangelo, which underscores the concept of self-realization and shaping one’s identity. She expressed a desire to pursue music in her fifties, reflecting a shift in her creative aspirations as she sought more meaningful expressions of her artistic voice.
While Wilson has long enjoyed a successful acting career, having been featured in films such as Sleepless in Seattle and My Big Fat Greek Wedding, her transition to music was born out of a sense of creative dissatisfaction. She noted that Hollywood often limits roles for older women, leading her to seek new avenues for expression.
Having first ventured into music in 2012, Wilson’s journey has been shaped by her collaborations with established songwriters and her desire to share stories that reflect her life experiences, including moments of grief and resilience following her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015.
Alongside tracks highlighting friendship and love, the album addresses serious topics such as the struggles women face regarding body image and age. Particularly resonant is the song “Spare Keys (Coming Home to Me),” which represents a rebirth of self as she embraces her identity and power later in life. “What if I allowed myself to really live in a way that felt aligned with the person that I am?” she posed, reflecting an empowering sentiment of self-acceptance.
Sound of a Woman is out now. Rita Wilson is set to perform in London on 13 and 14 November and in Glasgow on 16 November.
