Novak Djokovic plays down fitness concerns after Wimbledon victory

Novak Djokovic has insisted there is no cause for concern over his fitness after worrying scenes during his latest Wimbledon victory prompted questions over his physical condition, reports BritPanorama.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion appeared to be struggling at times during his four-set victory over Arthur Rinderknech, with television cameras capturing him repeatedly striking his legs between points in an apparent attempt to loosen up.

This unusual sight sparked speculation among fans that the Serbian was battling an injury as he continued his pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam singles title. However, Djokovic quickly dismissed those fears after booking his place in the fourth round at the All England Club.

Addressing the moment during his post-match press conference, the seven-time Wimbledon champion explained that the routine was simply his way of getting his body moving again during matches. “Nothing major,” he said. “Just trying to, I guess, wake my muscles up. Sometimes for some reason they shut down. Trying to lift my spirit, lift my energy.”

The reassuring update will come as a welcome boost to Djokovic’s supporters, with the 39-year-old appearing increasingly comfortable as the Championships progress. His route into the last 16 has been relatively straightforward, having dropped only two sets across his opening three matches.

Attention now turns to qualifier Roman Safiullin, who earned his place in the fourth round after knocking out Brazilian youngster Joao Fonseca. Many had expected Djokovic to face Fonseca once again after the teenager stunned him in five sets at Roland Garros earlier this year. Instead, the Serbian has been handed what looks, on paper, to be a more favourable tie.

If he emerges victorious over Safiullin, Djokovic would move into the quarter-finals, where either Felix Auger-Aliassime or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina await. History suggests Djokovic would have reason for confidence against either opponent; he has split his two previous meetings with Auger-Aliassime, but their last competitive encounter was in 2022, while he has enjoyed considerable success against Davidovich Fokina, winning five of their six previous meetings.

As the tournament unfolds, Djokovic’s persistence and experience remain key factors in his campaign, highlighting how the greatest athletes manage their physical challenges while aiming for their ultimate goals.
