Alejandro Garnacho faces challenges at Aston Villa ahead of Champions League return
Four years ago, the Champions League was the stage of Alejandro Garnacho’s big breakthrough. Nearly half a decade on, however, and the winger faces a fight to prove he belongs on such a grand stage, reports BritPanorama.
In 2022, Garnacho was a rising talent at Manchester United. His heroics had helped the club win the FA Youth Cup, with a dazzling double against Chelsea securing the prize. Erik ten Hag had Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Antony as his wide options. But having done enough to win the trust of his manager, Garnacho was given a platform to perform.
At first, it looked as though he had the potential to be special. Garnacho scored against Real Sociedad and celebrated with Cristiano Ronaldo, his childhood hero. Comparisons were, perhaps unfairly, made between the two. Some at the time felt it was a passing of the baton moment.
In the years that immediately followed, Garnacho established himself as a regular. Ten Hag favoured him, which was beneficial as Antony, Sancho, and Rashford were plagued by inconsistency.
Garnacho helped United win two trophies. He was an unused substitute in March 2023 when the Red Devils beat Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley to secure Carabao Cup glory. The following year, against Manchester City, he was the star of the show as they defied the odds to clinch the FA Cup. Garnacho scored that day, with Kobbie Mainoo also on target, in a victory that brought Ten Hag a few more months in the dugout.
Everything changed when Ruben Amorim took over. Initially, Amorim was optimistic about their partnership, believing Garnacho could adapt to his controversial 3-4-3 system. Rashford was loaned to Aston Villa in January 2025, Sancho joined Chelsea for a year, and Antony moved to Spain with Real Betis.
However, the relationship between Garnacho and Amorim deteriorated over several months, starting at a home match against Ipswich Town when Garnacho was substituted before half-time. The Argentine stormed down the tunnel in anger, with the cracks starting to show for the wider world. Amorim handled the matter internally, with Garnacho agreeing to treat the entire squad to dinner as an apology.
In May 2025, Garnacho’s situation worsened as he expressed frustration at being left out of the starting XI for the Europa League defeat to Tottenham, leading to a heated exchange with his manager. “Up until the final I played every round helping the team, and today I play 20 minutes, I don’t know,” he said. “The final will influence [my decision] but the whole season, the situation of the club. I’m going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens afterwards.”
Such was Amorim’s disgust at Garnacho’s attitude that he reportedly told him to ‘pray’ another club would sign him. In the end, it was Chelsea who secured his signature. Garnacho left Stamford Bridge for a fee of £40 million but found the environment challenging, scoring just eight times in 43 appearances during a solitary season, with only one goal coming in the league.
Facing limited opportunities at Chelsea, Garnacho transferred to Aston Villa. Unfortunately for him, his struggles have continued. Hopes that he would hit the ground running were quickly dashed. Garnacho has mainly been a bench player, with his place taken by 19-year-old academy graduate George Hemmings, highlighting a significant setback for a player once tipped for greatness.
Explaining his choice after a recent goalless draw with Hull, Villa manager Unai Emery stated that Garnacho has struggled to adapt to his demands. “George, he worked last year the whole year with us and played minutes,” Emery said. “He is performing fantastic and getting better.” He added that Garnacho needs to improve his performance to feature more consistently.
Garnacho’s situation echoes that of Harvey Elliott, who previously joined on loan from Liverpool but found himself sidelined due to Emery’s doubts. Similar to Elliott’s situation, Garnacho’s deal includes an option for a permanent transfer at £40 million, with conditions believed to be ‘easily achievable.’ However, given his poor form, the risk of further missed opportunities looms large.
As Garnacho prepares to return to the Champions League, his downfall shows no signs of slowing down. Whether he can make his mark in Europe’s biggest club competition, like he did for United four years ago, remains uncertain. This latest chapter in his young career serves as a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in professional football.
