Michael Duff sacked by Wycombe Wanderers after poor start to EFL season
Michael Duff has become the first managerial casualty of the new EFL season after Wycombe Wanderers sacked him just five League One matches into the campaign, reports BritPanorama.
The 48-year-old was dismissed following Saturday’s chaotic 3-3 draw with MK Dons, which extended the Chairboys’ winless start. Duff’s future was reportedly decided by the club’s hierarchy on Monday night before the players were informed of his departure the following morning.
Wycombe sits without a victory after collecting three draws and suffering two defeats from their opening five league fixtures. Their difficulties have extended into cup competitions as well, with Stevenage eliminating them from the Carabao Cup in the first round, followed by a penalty loss to Reading in the EFL Trophy.
Saturday’s extraordinary collapse against MK Dons ultimately proved to be Duff’s final match in charge. Wycombe appeared to be cruising towards their first league victory of the season after establishing a 2-0 advantage before half-time. However, the contest changed dramatically during a disastrous 10-minute spell after the interval, with the visitors scoring three times to move 3-2 ahead. Summer signing Jayden Wareham rescued a point by grabbing Wycombe’s equaliser, but the comeback was not enough to save his manager.
In confirming the decision, a club statement said: “Wycombe Wanderers have parted company with Head Coach Michael Duff and First-Team Coach Alex Morris. The club has made the decision in light of a disappointing run of results since the spring and believes the time is right to take a new direction.” The statement continued, thanking both Duff and Morris for their contributions and wishing them success in the future. An interim head coach is expected to be appointed later.
Duff had been approaching the first anniversary of his appointment, having replaced Mike Dodds last September. The former Northern Ireland defender inherited a side sitting 19th in League One and eventually guided Wycombe to an 11th-place finish.
