Newcastle United implements safety measures after near miss involving fan
Newcastle United have implemented new safety measures at their training ground following a concerning incident in which a player was nearly involved in a collision with a fan who stepped into the path of their car, reports BritPanorama.
The Premier League club has traditionally allowed supporters to gather outside Darsley Park to collect autographs and take photographs with players. However, that practice has been curtailed after an incident where a supporter came alarmingly close to being struck on the narrow access road to the facility.
The senior player involved was reportedly “alarmed” at how close the incident came to being a serious accident, prompting the club’s prompt response to enhance safety protocols.
In light of safety concerns, Newcastle issued a detailed statement urging fans not to gather near the entrance of the training ground or along surrounding roadways. According to reports, fans had also been seen approaching players’ vehicles while stopped at nearby traffic lights.
“To ensure the safety of all supporters, players, staff and members of the public, we are asking people to avoid gathering at our training centre entrance and surrounding roadways,” the club stated. They highlighted that the only entrance for players, staff, deliveries, and construction vehicles is a single narrow lane shared by both vehicles and pedestrians.
With the number of individuals congregating increasing, concerns about the risk of serious injury have heightened. New measures state that players and coaching staff are now instructed not to stop their vehicles upon entering or leaving the site under any circumstances.
“To support public safety, we have instructed players and coaches not to stop their vehicles upon entry or exit,” the club added. “We do not take this step lightly. We value the incredibly strong connection that exists between supporters and our players and coaches, but safety must come first.”
The club reassured supporters that their relationship with the players remains a priority, stating, “We will continue to organise opportunities for supporters to meet the players throughout the season, which will be communicated through our official channels.”
This shift marks a significant change for Newcastle, whose players have generally interacted freely with fans outside the training ground. As the club aims to balance fan engagement with safety, they noted that the decision reflects a necessary response to recent events.
