The Northern Irish golfer remarked, “Wait until after we’ve hit,” before thanking the spectator and stepping up to take his putt. McIlroy’s interaction highlights the focus and precision required in professional golf, where distractions can have significant consequences.
In the first round of the tournament, McIlroy struggled initially, hitting a tree with his opening shot and subsequently shanking his second. Ironically, these missteps came shortly after he had criticized the removal of trees from the course, suggesting that their absence impaired strategic elements of play. “It’s basically bash driver down there and then figure it out,” he said regarding his approach to the round.
Prior to the championship, the two-time Masters champion had expressed that the alterations to the course diminished its complexity. He reflected on the importance of trees in golfing strategy, stating, “When these traditional golf courses take a lot of trees out, it makes strategy not as much of a concern off the tee.” After hitting his first shot into a tree, the circumstances seemed to emphasize the impact of that very decision.
McIlroy’s playing partner, Jon Rahm, shared similar sentiments regarding the removal of trees from golf courses. He remarked on the irony of historical changes to courses that were initially designed with trees in mind and how their removal complicates the modern game. “While I see both points, I don’t know which one is more valid than the next,” he concluded.
During this major event, McIlroy dealt with a blister issue as well. He utilized padding to address the discomfort, separating his little toe from the others and opting for a half-size larger shoe with a softer toe box, stating it helped alleviate the pressure he experienced.
