Carrick dismisses passion criticisms after United’s defeat to Hull
Michael Carrick angrily dismissed a reporter’s “ridiculous” suggestion that Manchester United lacked passion after their disastrous Premier League defeat to Hull City, reports BritPanorama.
The Red Devils’ new campaign began in miserable fashion on Saturday as newly promoted Hull secured a stunning victory at the MKM Stadium, puncturing the optimism that had surrounded Carrick’s side over the summer.
Former Premier League striker Jan Age Fjortoft questioned whether United’s players had been outfought, which prompted an immediate response from Carrick. Speaking to Viaplay following the match, Fjortoft asked: “Would you accept that there was a lack of passion in the first half?”
Carrick retorted, “Oh come on, that’s ridiculous.” When Fjortoft attempted to clarify, the United manager remained firm. “Come on, you played football, you understand, that’s a ridiculous thing to say,” he said. “Just because you got beat doesn’t mean you don’t care about it.”
Fjortoft later emphasised he was not accusing United’s players of indifference but suggested Hull displayed greater intensity. Carrick rebutted this, pointing to the nature of Hull’s goals. “No, no. Their two goals came from set plays. Other than that, we had opportunities,” he explained. “I don’t think it was passion or anything to do with that. I think it was just their moment that made the difference in the game.”
Those moments proved devastating for United, with Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy both scoring from set-piece situations, allowing Hull to celebrate a memorable victory on their return to the top flight. Carrick acknowledged the need to address these defensive shortcomings but insisted there would be no overreaction after just one match. “We’ve been decent over a period of time at dealing with them, and today we didn’t,” he added.
Carrick’s remarks follow a summer that included the Premier League debuts of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, both of whom were substituted during the second half with United trailing by two goals. The result marks an early setback for Carrick after an encouraging summer, where he guided United back into the Champions League, capitalising on his impressive record as interim boss.
United are poised to bolster their midfield options further with the expected arrival of Carlos Baleba in a £70 million deal. Despite Carrick’s prior attempts to temper expectations, the opening performance will likely do little to assuage concerns about the season ahead.
Hull’s promotion through the Championship play-offs was achieved on a significantly smaller budget than their opponents, illustrating how even in defeat, greater intensity can tip the scales. Carrick now faces the task of regrouping his squad, as the challenges of the Premier League loom larger than ever.
