Gianni Infantino remains FIFA President despite controversy
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has “sincerely apologised for errors” made in connection with the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), yet he will retain his position. The 56-year-old faced significant backlash after suggesting that FIFA’s 211 member associations endorse the FFE, a commercial venture designed to manage rights to FIFA’s key tournaments, reports BritPanorama.
The FFE aimed to sell a 20 per cent share of the enterprise to private investors, with a valuation estimated at around $20 billion (£14.8 billion). Following intense criticism and calls to boycott FIFA events, the governing body convened an emergency meeting in Morocco to reassess the initiative.
A leaked letter, signed by Infantino and FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom, acknowledged the mistakes made during the FFE proposal. The letter stated: “We sincerely apologise for these errors and commit to them not happening again. With this in mind, we will conduct a necessary review, and a report will be presented to the FIFA Council at its next scheduled meeting.”
FIFA’s message emphasized the need to safeguard its “name and reputation” in light of the scrutiny it has faced. It continued: “With the project withdrawn, FIFA will no longer tolerate any attacks on its integrity, good governance and due process and will take all necessary measures to protect and safeguard its name and reputation.”
Despite prominent calls for Infantino to step down, including remarks from UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who labeled him “the wrong man,” FIFA remains steadfast in supporting him as president. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed similar sentiments of distrust in Infantino’s leadership. Infantino has returned to public view, appearing alongside Grafstrom at events such as the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
