Research highlights dementia risk factors
A new study suggests that avoiding three key health factors can delay the onset of dementia by approximately 13 years. The identified factors are type 2 diabetes, smoking, and high blood pressure, reports BritPanorama.
Dr. Josef Coresh, the senior author of the study published in the journal Neurology Open Access, emphasized the long-established correlation between these health risks and dementia. The research, which analyzed over 12,400 adults, also highlighted that the development of neurodegenerative diseases often begins before symptoms appear.
The findings indicate that participants averaging around age 56 who exhibited these three health risks were more than twice as likely to develop dementia and faced a fivefold increase in the risk of premature death from unrelated causes.
Lowering your risk for dementia
Dr. Coresh advised individuals with high blood pressure or diabetes, or those considering quitting smoking, to consult medical professionals. He noted that risk factors like obesity, physical inactivity, and poor diet can exacerbate hypertension and diabetes, implying that lifestyle changes could mitigate these risks. A lower-fat, plant-based diet such as the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet can significantly enhance health, according to experts.
“The way we live has the most profound impact,” Dr. Andrew Freeman remarked, pointing out that up to 45% of dementia cases can be attributed to modifiable factors. Freeman added that a holistic approach to health—encouraging physical activity and emotional well-being—is crucial.
Highlighting more tangible odds
The adults studied are part of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities cohort, which has been tracking nearly 15,800 individuals since the late 1980s from various US communities. Those without the three identified risk factors had an average of 30.1 dementia-free years, contrasted with 17.5 years for those who did have the risks, underscoring the potential longevity benefits of managing these health concerns.
Gender and racial disparities were noted, with women maintaining dementia-free status slightly longer than men, while Black participants tended to develop dementia at an earlier age compared to White participants. By age 85, only 7% of adults with three risk factors were dementia-free, in stark contrast to 35% of those without.
Factors affecting health outcomes included body mass index, prevalence of stroke, and levels of physical activity and education, correlating significantly with the risk of dementia. Many participants also carried the APOE ε4 gene, a known strong genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease.
The findings from this research join the wider conversation about public health, particularly in highlighting the significance of preventive measures in lifestyle to lower the risk of dementia onset. The importance of setting personal health goals and engaging in supportive social environments is increasingly emphasized by health professionals.
