Middlesbrough and Southampton play out goalless draw in Championship play-off
Middlesbrough and Southampton played out a frustrating stalemate in their Championship play-off semi-final opener at the Riverside Stadium, leaving the tie delicately balanced ahead of Tuesday’s return fixture, reports BritPanorama.
The hosts controlled proceedings throughout, commanding 64 per cent of possession and firing 20 attempts at goal compared to just six from their visitors.
Tommy Conway proved the most dangerous threat for Kim Hellberg’s side, rattling the woodwork with a fierce strike in the first half after being set up brilliantly by Riley McGree. Despite generating 2.45 expected goals, Boro simply could not find a way past Daniel Peretz in the Southampton goal.
The encounter was overshadowed by allegations that Southampton had sent a staff member to observe Middlesbrough’s training sessions ahead of the fixture, resulting in the EFL charging the south coast club with a regulatory breach. Hellberg was forthright when questioned about the matter before kick-off, responding with a pointed “Possibly?!” when the allegations were raised.
“It’s not affected our build up,” the Boro manager told Sky Sports. “We have done what we should have done before this type of game. We’ve watched every Southampton game there is, trying to find solutions to beat them – how they press, how they build up. Putting every hour towards getting the advantage to win, in the right way.”
Hellberg’s men produced a relentless opening 45 minutes that left Southampton clinging on desperately. David Strelec headed over from close range early on following a Morgan Whittaker corner, while Luke Ayling blazed wide from a promising position.
Conway twice went agonisingly close in quick succession. First, James Bree threw himself in front of the striker’s effort to make a crucial goal-line clearance, before the Scotland international’s low drive cannoned back off the far post moments later. The hosts registered 17 shots before the interval, accumulating 1.39 expected goals while Tonda Eckert’s side failed to muster a single attempt.
Southampton emerged with renewed purpose after the break, gradually wrestling control away from their hosts. The visitors’ best opportunity arrived in the 84th minute when Ryan Manning delivered a free-kick and Taylor Harwood-Bellis powered a header against the crossbar from six yards out. Substitute Samuel Edozie then spurned a golden chance on the counter-attack, dragging his shot narrowly wide of Sol Brynn’s goal.
The stalemate means everything remains to play for at St Mary’s on Tuesday evening. Middlesbrough head south unbeaten in five matches, while Southampton have suffered just one defeat in their previous 24 fixtures across all competitions.
This contest not only reflects the competitive essence of Championship football but also the undercurrent of controversy that often shadows critical matches like this. With so much at stake, the second leg promises to be a gripping encounter.
