Manchester United fans call for FA intervention over Youth Cup final venue
Manchester United supporters have urged the FA to intervene after Manchester City announced plans to host the FA Youth Cup final at the Joie Stadium, which has a seating capacity of just 7,000, despite United offering to stage the match at the more spacious Old Trafford, reports BritPanorama.
The match is scheduled for May 14, with United fans allocated only 968 tickets. This limited allocation has drawn criticism, as many believe that young players deserve a more prominent stage for such an important match.
The Manchester United Supporters Trust and Manchester United Fans’ Forum released a joint statement condemning the venue choice. They described it as a “disgrace,” recalling examples of previous finals that attracted crowds far exceeding the current allocation.
The supporters’ statement emphasized the significance of the event, stating: “Last time United were in the final, we had 67,000 fans in Old Trafford.” The groups have called on the FA to ensure that the final is played at either Old Trafford or the Etihad Stadium, advocating for a larger audience to witness these young talents.
In defense, Manchester City has asserted its right to host the match at Joie Stadium, having been designated as the home team for the fixture. The club claims scheduling conflicts with its senior team’s remaining Premier League matches prevent the use of the Etihad Stadium. City officials point to ongoing construction work on the North Stand as a factor in their decision, maintaining they are not in violation of any regulations.
Manchester City’s Youth Cup final staging at a smaller venue marks a departure from convention, as historically, the final has typically been held at the home ground of the host team. The allocation of tickets and the choice of venue have sparked intense discussions about the prioritization of fan engagement and the experiences afforded to young athletes in crucial matches.
As the countdown to the final continues, it’s a stark reminder of how the spotlight shines brightest on youth yet can sometimes be dimmed by logistical choices, leaving many questioning if these young talents are receiving the grand showcase they truly merit.
