LIV Golf cancels Team Championship event
LIV Golf has informed its players that the Team Championship event scheduled for the end of this month has been cancelled, despite tickets still being available for purchase, reports BritPanorama.
The season-ending competition, which was set to feature a £29.6 million prize fund with 13 teams competing in Detroit, has been anticipated to be cancelled for several weeks. This is underscored by the absence of preparations at the host venue along with Fox TV’s removal of the tournament from its listings.
Next week’s tournament in Indiana is now poised to be the final event of what has been a tumultuous season for the breakaway tour, raising concerns about the future of LIV Golf.
Recently, the league’s CEO, Scott O’Neil, announced that LIV has secured a new investment package aimed at guiding the league into its “new era.” He noted that this move is underpinned by strong interest from additional investors, creating a multi-partner model intended for long-term stability and growth.
“LIV Golf has an agreement in place with a lead investor, signed by the investor and approved by the Board, to anchor the transaction and play a key role in supporting the path forward for the League’s next era, driven by and for the players,” O’Neil stated.
With speculation surrounding its future, the league has faced uncertainty following the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund’s announcement in April that it would withdraw support at the end of the season.
Underlining the league’s commitment is Bryson DeChambeau, its poster boy, who has expressed his full dedication to LIV, despite a desire to participate in the PGA Tour. He remarked on the potential for golf course stadiums similar to the PGA Tour’s TPC Sawgrass model, as well as a willingness to explore events on traditional tours.
