Aston Villa prepares for Super Cup final against PSG
John McGinn has emphasised Aston Villa’s “hunger and desire” ahead of the Super Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain, which takes place tonight in Salzburg, Austria. The Europa League winners are seeking to secure their first piece of silverware this season, reports BritPanorama.
Despite a challenging transfer window that saw the club lose notable players such as star attacker Morgan Rogers to Chelsea and Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, Villa remains poised for competition. Full-back Lucas Digne has transferred to PSG but is eligible for tonight’s match.
McGinn, the Villa captain, expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to maintain competitiveness despite the departures. “A lot has changed, yeah, but a lot has changed in the eight years that I’ve been here,” he stated. “When we’re signing the best young English talent, there’s only going to be interest in them. When your players are performing at the highest level, there’s going to be interest.”
He further acknowledged the need to integrate new players into the squad while retaining the club’s successful structure and standards. “We’ve still got the same hunger and desire to go and achieve more,” he added. McGinn recognised that expectations remain consistent, urging the squad to compete with the best in England and Europe alike.
Manager Unai Emery noted that his team will be without key players including Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa, and Emi Martinez, while new signing Johan Manzambi is also unavailable due to injury. This represents a significant obstacle as Emery attempts to win his first Super Cup after three previous unsuccessful attempts.
Emery has prepared a competitive team despite not being at full strength. He remarked on the early challenges of the season, stating, “Of course tomorrow we are not going to be in our best moment,” but remains committed to achieving a strong performance in the final.
