Memphis Depay vows to take action against Corinthians
Former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay has vowed to “punish” Brazilian side Corinthians over “unacceptable behaviour” regarding his contract, reports BritPanorama.
The Dutchman, 32, joined Corinthians in 2024 on a two-year deal, with the club opting not to extend his contract, citing strict financial constraints. Despite his contributions, including 79 appearances and 20 goals, Depay has expressed disappointment at the club’s decision.
In a statement on social media, Depay indicated his intent to take action. “Very disappointed to read that Corinthians decided not to honour our agreement in place to extend my contract for two more years,” he wrote. He emphasized that the renewal had been explicitly agreed upon by senior officials, implying a breach of trust.
“Some people decided, however, to breach this engagement,” he continued. “I didn’t want this situation and always respected the club throughout the process, but now I am forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests. In the upcoming days, I will speak publicly, but rest assured that I will not leave this unacceptable behaviour unsanctioned.”
In response to Depay’s comments, Corinthians stated that financial health drove their decision to not renew the contract. “Sport Club Corinthians Paulista has decided not to renew the contract of athlete Memphis Depay,” the club announced, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining a balanced fiscal approach.
The club expressed gratitude to Depay and acknowledged his significant contributions over his tenure, during which he helped secure three titles: the Paulistão and the Copa do Brasil in 2025, and the Supercopa Rei in 2026. However, they reiterated that the financial implications made the contract renewal untenable.
“Given Corinthians’ current and future financial obligations, it became clear that taking on a new commitment of this magnitude would not be compatible, at this moment, with the financial balance we need to preserve to ensure the institution’s sustainability,” the statement continued.
Corinthians also announced plans for a press conference in the coming days, where President Osmar Stabile will clarify the decision further.
