Joe Root defends England’s drinking culture amid recent controversies

Joe Root has dismissed suggestions that England should introduce an alcohol ban, insisting the Test squad does not have a drinking culture despite recent controversies, reports BritPanorama.

The veteran batsman, who leads the side in Wednesday’s second Test against New Zealand at the Oval, acknowledged past mistakes but argued that imposing a blanket prohibition would be misguided.

“I don’t necessarily think that’s the way to go,” Root told Sky Sports. “I don’t think there’s a drinking culture within our team. I think, like I said, there have been occasions where we’ve let ourselves down, and we’ve got things wrong.”

Both Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were removed from the squad last week as an investigation continues into their actions following England’s victory in the opening Test at Lord’s. Reports indicate that a member of England’s security staff was struck by a Saracens rugby player, with Stokes present during the incident. England’s director of cricket, Rob Key, has suggested that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is considering alcohol restrictions due to concerns about player conduct highlighted during the recent Ashes series.

Root emphasised the importance of allowing players to celebrate their achievements after significant efforts. “We have to accept that and move forward from that and learn from that,” he stated. “But I also think that when you work towards something for a long time, there should be opportunities to celebrate that with the team.”

Highlighting the mixed dynamics of the team, Root remarked, “Not everyone drinks anyway within our group, but you should be able to get together and celebrate that and spend that time.” He reiterated the value of camaraderie: “Some of my greatest memories have been in the dressing room afterwards. So, that’s good fun and good stuff that you can do off the back of winning, but you’ve got to pick the right times and the right places, and I think that’s the important thing.”

Addressing the recent controversies, Root acknowledged that “there’s been a few incidents where guys have let themselves down, but I don’t necessarily think that’s a fair reflection of our dressing room.” He added, “We work incredibly hard” and that the team must “earn the trust of everyone back by being as professional as we can.” Root expressed support for Stokes, noting, “I’ve spoken with Ben; he seems in a good place in the last week or so.”

The current discourse around drinking culture in sports teams underscores not just individual accountability but also broader team dynamics. How England navigates these issues could shape their performance and unity moving forward as they prepare for an exciting series ahead.
