SpaceX’s latest Starship prototype, designated Ship 40, has been retrieved from the Indian Ocean following a successful test flight conducted on July 24, 2025, marking a significant step in the company’s space exploration endeavors, reports BritPanorama.

The 13th test flight of this fully integrated Starship consisted of both the upper spacecraft and the Super Heavy rocket booster. During the flight, Ship 40 demonstrated a notable ability to maintain control through the reentry process and achieved its softest splashdown to date at the designated site in the ocean, according to SpaceX spokesperson Dan Huot. The recovery of Ship 40 was not initially anticipated, as SpaceX prepared for its return to the ocean after unsuccessful attempts with previous prototypes.

Subsequent satellite imagery captured vessels engaged in the recovery operation, highlighting a coordinated effort involving both SpaceX recovery ships and Norwegian tugboats. On July 28, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed plans to recover the vehicle, stating that the initial splashdown was a “dream scenario.” The recovery effort involved the ships Skimmer Tide and Normand Ranger, which supported the tow operation after Ship 40 remained afloat rather than sinking, as had been the case with prior prototypes.

Images taken over the weekend showed the ongoing recovery efforts, with Skimmer Tide and Normand Ranger moving at restricted speeds. Go Australis, another recovery vessel, has since separated from the group and is returning to Australia. The ability of Ship 40 to float due to its intact structure provides an important insight into the vehicle’s viability for future missions.

SpaceX is now focusing on evaluating Ship 40’s performance, particularly its heat shield, which is designed to withstand extreme temperatures during reentry. The company delayed the flight to ensure optimal weather conditions for the capture of detailed imagery of the spacecraft. Musk has expressed optimism regarding the heat shield’s performance but acknowledges the engineering challenges that remain in ensuring the spacecraft’s readiness for rapid reflight.

Looking ahead, SpaceX aims for a higher level of reusability with its Starship program, which has experienced a blend of successes and failures throughout its testing history. Musk has indicated that future flights may pursue a dry land landing for the upper spacecraft, depending on data reviews from the July flight.

This latest milestone positions SpaceX uniquely in the realm of space exploration, as no other rocket has showcased a rapidly reusable upper spacecraft. As the company continues to develop and refine the Starship technology, there remain critical challenges ahead, including methods for refueling while in orbit and managing the complexities of lunar and interplanetary missions.

The developments surrounding Ship 40 underscore the evolving capabilities of SpaceX as it embarks on ambitious goals, including the eventual deployment of human crews to Mars and beyond.
