Glenn Hoddle expresses interest in Tottenham job prior to Igor Tudor's dismissal

Glenn Hoddle offered managerial role at Tottenham before Tudor’s sacking

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle has disclosed that he expressed his willingness to take on the Spurs managerial position prior to Igor Tudor’s dismissal. The 68-year-old, alongside Ossie Ardiles, approached the club following a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, a result that ultimately sealed Tudor’s fate after a woeful seven-match spell that yielded just one point, reports BritPanorama.

Hoddle remarked on the Jeff Stelling Show: “Ossie and myself, after the Forest game, we felt there was a real problem there. Ossie and I made it clear that we would go in there if they wanted us to go in there.”

His connection to Tottenham is longstanding; having made 490 appearances for the club from 1975 to 1987, Hoddle later managed the team from 2001 to 2003, guiding them to the League Cup final in 2002. His managerial tenure ended in September 2003 after consecutive mid-table finishes, with his last role at Wolves ending in July 2006. Since then, he has predominantly worked as a television pundit.

Ardiles, also a club icon, had a brief and turbulent managerial period, lasting just over a year before his dismissal in October 1994. Hoddle articulated his belief that the club needed an emotional connection and a stabilizing presence in its current crisis, saying, “It looked to me as if it needed some love; it needed some people to go in there and unite the fans.” Despite being overlooked for the role, he expressed no resentment towards the decision.

Hoddle emphasized the importance of having the right leadership at the club, stating, “So as long as they’ve got the right man in… De Zerbi has gone in, and everyone’s got to unite and get together. But they’ve got a real task on their hands haven’t they? I just want them to stay up.” The current manager, Roberto De Zerbi, faces a formidable challenge to preserve Tottenham’s Premier League status as the club sits two points adrift of safety with the season approaching its climax.

De Zerbi’s record thus far includes one win, one draw, and one loss across his initial three matches in charge. With four pivotal fixtures remaining, Spurs must secure victories to avoid the risk of relegation from the Premier League. Upcoming matches include a tough away game at Aston Villa followed by a home fixture against Leeds, with crucial contests against Chelsea and Everton rounding off their campaign. Each of these matches will be vital for Tottenham’s survival.

In a landscape where emotions are often intertwined with footballing decisions, Hoddle’s call for unity highlights just how precarious the situation has become at Tottenham. As the clock ticks down on their season, it serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between legacy and expectation.
