Small plane crashes over Nazca Lines, killing 13
LIMA — A small tourist plane crashed as it flew over the Nazca Lines archaeological site in southern Peru on Saturday, killing 13 people, authorities in Nazca province said, reports BritPanorama.
Peru’s Ministry of Commerce and Tourism confirmed that the plane was carrying 11 foreign tourists and two crew members when the accident occurred.
The crash took place near Pueblo Viejo, approximately 4 miles from the city of Nazca and roughly 7 miles from the Nazca Lines site, according to local authorities.
The plane belonged to the local airline Aerodiana and had departed from Pisco Airport prior to the incident.
Aerodiana expressed its “most sincere condolences and solidarity to the families and loved ones of those who have passed away” and stated it is cooperating with authorities.
“Throughout our 18 years of operation, we have maintained an unwavering commitment to the safety of our passengers and crews,” the airline noted. “This incident affects us deeply and reaffirms our willingness to cooperate fully and responsibly with whatever is required by the authorities.”
Reports indicate that the accident occurred at 12:55 p.m. local time when the plane was conducting a sightseeing flight and preparing for its return journey.
Following the crash, the aircraft caught fire, which hindered rescue efforts, according to Peruvian broadcaster RPP. Firefighters and municipal police were dispatched to manage the fire and initiate rescue operations.
As of now, the cause of the crash remains unknown, and local authorities have stated that an investigation will take place.
Footage circulating on social media displayed the smoking wreckage of the aircraft in the arid landscape. Reuters has not independently verified the authenticity of the footage.
The Nazca Lines, which comprise enormous drawings and geometric figures etched into desert plains, are a significant tourist attraction in Peru, drawing approximately 100,000 visitors annually who typically view them from the air.
Flights over the Nazca Lines from the nearby Maria Reiche Airport had been suspended on Friday due to strong winds exceeding 25 mph, which caused visibility issues.
The high winds also forced another small plane carrying two Peruvian tourists to divert to Marcona Airport, as reported by local media.
Aerodiana has stated that it will review its flight schedule “in accordance with the directives of the relevant authorities.”
