Scunthorpe United defender hospitalized after train stabbing

Scunthorpe United defender Jonathan Gjoshe is currently in hospital following a mass stabbing incident on a train in Cambridgeshire on Saturday, reports BritPanorama.

The 22-year-old has non-life-threatening injuries, as confirmed by a club statement noting he continues to receive treatment. Gjoshe is awaiting an operation for a slashed bicep, according to the BBC.

Armed police were dispatched to Huntingdon station after reports emerged of passengers being attacked on the LNER train, which was en route to London. More than 30 officers reached the scene in under eight minutes, classifying the incident as a major occurrence.

Authorities reported that initially, nine individuals were injured, with at least four patients discharged since the attack. A 32-year-old man, Anthony Williams, has been charged with 11 counts of attempted murder, appearing today at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court.

A club statement detailed: “Scunthorpe United can confirm registered player Jonathan Gjoshe was one of the victims affected by the shocking attack on an LNER train bound for London on Saturday evening. We can confirm that Jonathan sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the attack, but currently remains in hospital. Due to the ongoing investigations taking place, we are currently unable to update further. Everyone at the club, from the Board, management and his teammates, along with all staff behind the scenes, sends our heartfelt well wishes to Jonathan for a full recovery, which is also extended to all the victims onboard the train.”

Gjoshe joined Scunthorpe United on a non-contract basis in September 2025, having previously played for several clubs, including Corinthian Casuals. His preferred position is right back, but he has not yet started a fixture this season.

The investigation into the motives behind the attack continues, with British Transport Police stating that there is currently no indication of the incident being linked to terrorism.

Events like this serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced in public spaces, emphasizing the ongoing need for vigilance and safety measures in daily life.
