Ederson targeted with crowd projectiles during thrilling Istanbul derby

Former Premier League goalkeeper Ederson was seen complaining to the referee after being pelted with cups during the Istanbul derby over the weekend, reports BritPanorama.

The Brazilian, playing for Fenerbahce, faced a barrage of items from Besiktas fans during the match, which ended with a score of 3-2 in favour of his team.

At one point during the tumultuous game, Ederson attempted to volley a cup back at the supporters, illustrating the heated atmosphere. This match marked his eighth appearance for Fenerbahce after his transfer from Manchester City, where he secured six Premier League titles from 2017 to 2025.

The tension in the stadium escalated after a VAR decision led to the dismissal of Orkun Kokcu from the Besiktas side, prompting head coach Sergen Yalcin to also receive a red card for his protests.

In the first half, Besiktas quickly took the lead with El Bilal Toure scoring within five minutes, followed by Emirhan Topcu extending the advantage. However, the shift in momentum began with Fenerbahce capitalising on their numerical advantage.

Just before the interval, Marco Asensio equalised, setting the stage for a dramatic second half. Ismail Yuksek later reduced Fenerbahce’s deficit, while Jhon Duran netted the winner in the 83rd minute, leading to jubilant celebrations among the players, particularly Ederson, who expressed palpable relief and excitement.

This victory propelled Fenerbahce to within four points of league leaders Galatasaray. Meanwhile, Besiktas now sits sixth in the standings, underscoring the intense rivalry that defines Turkish football, specifically among its “Big Three” clubs including Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

In the end, the Istanbul derby was not just a contest of skill but a reminder of the passions football ignites, showcasing how sport often intertwines with the greater narrative of local identities and rivalries.
