Dan Burn equals World Cup record with late defensive heroics

Dan Burn has equalled a 60-year record for the joint-most clearances by a player subbed late on in a World Cup, reports BritPanorama.

The Newcastle defender came on in the 75th minute and made a significant impact during the 13th minute of stoppage time, helping England secure a 3-2 victory against Mexico.

Despite playing only 28 minutes, Burn’s total of six clearances matched the record set during the 1966 World Cup. This defensive effort proved crucial as the Three Lions clung on for a narrow win.

The match highlighted England’s struggles with possession, registering just 33.2 per cent—its lowest in a World Cup game since 1996. Notably, the team’s 48 clearances were the most they have made in a World Cup match since 1990.

Following Jarrell Quansah’s red card, England shifted to a 5-3-1 formation, with Burn acknowledging that their original game plan was quickly abandoned. “I don’t know if we quite planned for this scenario. I knew that I was being brought here for a certain reason,” he said.

Burn, who has risen through the football ranks from non-league to the international stage, reflected on the pride of representing England in this prestigious tournament. “I’m very proud to play for England at a World Cup. I never, ever thought I would be saying that when I first started,” he noted.

The intense atmosphere of the packed Azteca Stadium left a lasting impression on Burn. “I don’t think I’ll ever forget that night. The atmosphere was crazy,” he said, expressing hope that fans back home felt proud of their performance despite the late drama.

Looking ahead, England will face Norway in the quarter-finals of the competition, scheduled for 10pm on Saturday in Miami. Acknowledging the challenges posed by Norway’s squad, which includes star striker Erling Haaland, Burn stated, “It’s going to be a huge challenge for us… we’ll celebrate this victory, it was really hard-earned, and then we’ll turn our attention to Norway.”

As England advances through the tournament, Burn’s contribution underscores the unpredictable nature of knockout football, where moments of individual brilliance can become defining snapshots in a team’s journey. How fitting that in a sport driven by the unexpected, a late substitution made history under the lights of a legendary stadium.
