Croatia manager criticises defensive lapses in England match
Croatia’s head coach Zlatko Dalic has expressed frustration over his team’s “disastrous” goals conceded against England, despite their preparations for the Three Lions’ set-piece strategies ahead of their World Cup opener. England secured a thrilling 4-2 victory in Texas, bouncing back from two equalizers to clinch all three points, reports BritPanorama.
Harry Kane netted twice for England, while Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford added to the tally following a strong second-half display. However, Croatia was left to lament its inability to defend effectively during dead-ball situations, as Dalic noted that his players did not adhere to the instructions they had practiced before the match.
“Allow me first to congratulate England on the win,” Dalic said. “It was quite a strange game, quite a difficult game, as we expected it to be. In the first half, we played quite well, kept to everything we agreed on, but unfortunately, we knew set-pieces were the greatest danger, and we conceded two goals after corners.”
Dalic acknowledged the team’s awareness of England’s proficiency in set-piece scenarios but was disappointed that they could not prevent Kane from scoring following a corner delivery from Declan Rice. The Croatian manager highlighted that with around 40% of England’s goals coming from such situations, they must improve significantly in this aspect as they look ahead to their next matches.
England had gone into halftime level at 2-2 after Croatia’s Petar Musa found the net to even the score moments before the break. After the interval, Tuchel’s men returned with renewed energy; Bellingham restored the lead, and a late goal from Rashford sealed the win.
“I loved the second half. All of it,” England’s manager stated. “We encouraged them to be brave and play with courage. I loved how they responded.” England will now prepare for their next fixture against Ghana, while Croatia faces increasing pressure as they gear up for their match against Panama.
In football, as ever, the margins remain thin, and Dalic’s reflections serve as a reminder of how pivotal set-pieces can be in high-stakes encounters. The balance of triumph and disappointment is often razor-sharp, especially on the world stage.
