Brighton hands Arsenal their first defeat of the season
Arsenal’s perfect start to their Premier League title defence came crashing to a halt this afternoon as Brighton delivered a commanding 3-0 victory at the Amex Stadium, reports BritPanorama.
Mikel Arteta’s side had travelled to the south coast riding a seven-match winning streak, with the chance to match a club record stretching back 123 years of eight consecutive victories at the start of a campaign. However, that ambition appeared doomed from the outset as a rampant Brighton outfit tore into the champions from the first whistle.
This was Arsenal’s fourth away fixture in just ten days, and the toll was evident as they were thoroughly outfought and outclassed by Fabian Hurzeler’s side. Brighton had been the dominant force throughout, with the hosts — who entered the match as the division’s top scorers — pinning Arsenal back from the opening minutes. Raya looked uncharacteristically uncertain in goal, while a Bruno Guimaraes error almost gifted Kostoulas an even earlier opener. The teenager nearly added a fourth after the break, steering a shot narrowly wide, while Pascal Struijk nodded a corner just past the post as Arsenal’s defensive frailties continued to be exposed.
Despite making substitutions, Arteta saw little change in his team’s fortunes. An effort from Kai Havertz was saved by Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen, and at the other end, Matt O’Riley tested Raya with a header he managed to keep out. The champions could offer no complaints about the outcome.
The defeat marks Arsenal’s first loss of the current season and sends Brighton catapulting to third in the Premier League table, sitting just two points behind Arsenal. The Gunners remain in second, level on points with Manchester City but having played an additional fixture.
For Hurzeler, the win represents arguably the finest result of his managerial career, coming just days after his side mounted a remarkable Carabao Cup comeback at Old Trafford. Brighton’s performance served as a genuine statement of intent to the rest of the top flight.
As for Arteta, he now faces a three-week break before his side’s next outing — 21 days to dwell on a result that swiftly dispels any notion of the champions cruising to back-to-back league titles. Given how quickly fortunes can change, Arsenal’s rivals will take heart from this demonstration of vulnerability — the race is far from settled.
