Rory McIlroy pays tribute to Patrick Reed following injury withdrawal
Rory McIlroy offered a gracious tribute to Patrick Reed after the American’s injury-enforced departure from the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, reports BritPanorama.
Reed’s withdrawal came as a bitter blow during what had been a promising week in Surrey. The former Masters winner had produced an impressive opening round and was comfortably placed inside the top ten when his tournament unravelled on Friday afternoon. Trouble struck on the ninth hole, where Reed found himself in an awkward position near a tree root. He attempted a difficult shot but was visibly in discomfort with his wrist immediately afterwards.
The American was unable to continue and was transported from the course by buggy, bringing an abrupt end to his Wentworth challenge. The timing could scarcely have been worse for Reed, who had arrived at the BMW PGA Championship sitting atop the Race to Dubai standings with a slender lead over McIlroy.
McIlroy now finds himself with a golden opportunity to narrow the gap at the summit of the Race to Dubai standings. The double Masters champion began Saturday’s third round on eight under par, trailing tournament leader Ryan Gerard by four strokes. A commanding weekend performance at Wentworth could significantly impact Reed’s advantage in the season-long competition.
“Unfortunately he’s pulled out this week, which gives me an opportunity to try to claw back some ground that I lost last week in Ireland,” McIlroy said. “This weekend is a big weekend for me to pick up a few points and make the race even tighter going into these last few weeks.”
Reed left LIV Golf earlier this year, opting to compete for one of the ten DP World Tour cards available as a route back to the PGA Tour. McIlroy’s performance over the weekend is now critical in his pursuit of a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai crown that would draw him level with Colin Montgomerie’s all-time mark. His Friday round of 67 demonstrated the kind of form needed to mount a serious challenge.
The relationship between McIlroy and Reed has been far from straightforward.
