Rory McIlroy seizes opportunity as Patrick Reed withdraws from BMW PGA Championship
Rory McIlroy believes he has been handed a major opportunity to reignite his Race to Dubai challenge after rival Patrick Reed withdrew from the BMW PGA Championship through injury, reports BritPanorama.
McIlroy moved firmly into contention at Wentworth with a five-under-par round of 67, leaving him at eight under for the tournament and four shots behind halfway leader Ryan Gerard.
The Northern Irishman understands that a strong performance over the weekend could significantly reduce Reed’s advantage at the top of the DP World Tour standings as he seeks a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai crown. Reed had begun the championship promisingly but withdrew after a disastrous Friday, finishing nine over par for his second round.
McIlroy acknowledged that Reed’s exit has opened the door for him to exert pressure in the closing weeks of the season. “Unfortunately he’s pulled out this week, which gives me an opportunity to try to claw back some ground that I lost last week in Ireland,” McIlroy said. “This weekend is a big weekend for me to pick up a few points and make the race even tighter going into these last few weeks.”
Starting strongly, McIlroy recorded three birdies within his first five holes. Although a dropped shot at the eighth briefly hindered his momentum, the reigning Masters champion responded well, collecting four shots on the back nine, with consecutive birdies on the 17th and 18th, despite another bogey at the 16th. His strong finish kept him within reach of Gerard, who leads the tournament with a flawless seven-under round of 65.
Gerard’s performance propelled him to a two-shot advantage over Australian Adam Scott and Italian Filippo Celli, while Aaron Rai, who had previously shared the lead, finished his round with a 69.
Despite McIlroy’s positive progression, several notable players faced difficulties at Wentworth. Five-time major winner Brooks Koepka missed the cut, concluding his tournament at one over par. Tommy Fleetwood’s follow-up score of 74 left him at three over, while Jon Rahm suffered a disappointing finish, ending up 138th after rounds of 78 and 77.
As McIlroy heads into the weekend, both the BMW PGA Championship title and crucial Race to Dubai points lie firmly in his sights, marking a pivotal moment in his season.
