Redknapp criticises Manchester United youngsters after Brighton defeat
Jamie Redknapp has launched a brutal attack on Manchester United youngsters Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven following their calamitous performances in the dramatic defeat to Brighton on Wednesday night, reports BritPanorama.
Michael Carrick handed the defensive duo an opportunity to impress at Old Trafford, with regular centre-backs Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez dropping out of the starting XI. United initially appeared to be cruising towards victory after racing into a two-goal lead, with highly-rated academy graduate Shea Lacey marking his full debut with a sensational strike before Mason Mount converted a rebound less than 60 seconds later.
However, the hosts spectacularly surrendered control as Brighton produced a stunning comeback. Charalampos Kostoulas reduced the deficit shortly before the interval, while second-half goals from Pascal Gross and Maxim De Cuyper completed the turnaround. The result saw Brighton become the first visiting team in 50 years to win at Old Trafford after falling two goals behind.
Redknapp was scathing in his assessment of United’s inexperienced defensive partnership, insisting their display showed precisely why Maguire and Martinez remain ahead of them in Carrick’s pecking order. “The inexperience of the two young centre-backs showed,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “I have no doubt the two of them will be on the phone to their agent asking, ‘Why am I not playing at the moment?’ That’s why. These kinds of performances tonight.”
The former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder accused Yoro and Heaven of being “inept” and unfavourably compared their approach with the aggression displayed by Brighton defender Luka Vuskovic. Redknapp was particularly frustrated by the pair’s decision-making, claiming they were too quick to appeal for decisions instead of reacting to the danger unfolding around them.
Turning his attention to Brighton’s equaliser, Redknapp criticised Heaven for failing to close down the eventual scorer with sufficient urgency, stating, “Heaven has to get across and sprint 20 yards to the player who is going to score. Instead, he’s on his heels and doesn’t anticipate the danger. He is jogging.” Yoro also came under fire for what Redknapp viewed as a weak attempt to prevent the goal. “I don’t know what he is doing,” the pundit continued.
Redknapp further questioned Yoro’s efforts to stop the ball, saying, “What kind of effort is this to stop the ball? This isn’t a five-a-side competition. You have to be aggressive.” He warned that neither defender would establish himself as a United regular unless their performances improved, insisting Yoro’s sizeable transfer fee would not protect him from criticism.
Karl Darlow, meanwhile, endured a difficult United debut between the posts. Former Red Devils captain Ashley Young questioned the goalkeeper’s communication with Heaven during Brighton’s opening goal, which came from a straightforward long ball. “Between Heaven and Darlow, one of them has to sort it out,” Young said. “Someone has got to talk, but there was nothing there at all.”
