Ben Stokes could make surprising return to England team ahead of Ashes series

Ben Stokes’ potential return ahead of Ashes welcomed by cricket chief

Ben Stokes has been handed an unexpected route back into the England fold after cricket chief Rob Key admitted he would welcome a sensational international comeback ahead of next summer’s Ashes, reports BritPanorama.

The former England captain stunned the sport when he stepped away from international cricket following the recent 2-1 Test series defeat against New Zealand, bringing an end to a remarkable career that included Ashes triumphs, World Cup glory, and one of the greatest all-round records in English cricket.

His retirement came after a turbulent few weeks in which he was ruled out of the second Test against New Zealand for breaching a team curfew after celebrating England’s opening victory. The incident fuelled speculation that Stokes had become disillusioned with the England set-up and his relationship with senior figures within the ECB.

But despite those events, Key has made it clear that the door remains firmly open should the 35-year-old decide he has one final chapter left in him. Speaking to Sky Sports News, England’s managing director admitted an Ashes return would be welcomed with open arms. “It would be a brilliant story if he does,” Key said.

Although the England chief revealed Stokes has given no indication that he is preparing a dramatic U-turn, he refused to dismiss the possibility. Key also insisted suggestions of any lasting fallout between the pair were wide of the mark, stating, “No, not at all. Not as far as I’m concerned.”

The comments came after a significant day for English cricket, with the ECB confirming Joe Root will return as England Test captain while Stephen Fleming has been appointed as Brendon McCullum’s successor as head coach. The leadership overhaul represents a huge reset following England’s disappointing Ashes defeat in Australia and the subsequent series loss to New Zealand.

Fleming arrives with an outstanding coaching reputation and believes his own experiences with the pressures of international cricket can help England’s players flourish. “I know what it feels like to have the weight of leadership and international cricket take their toll, and when that happened to me, my love for the game was rekindled by going to Notts and winning the County Championship,” Fleming said.

The appointment is viewed as one of the biggest decisions of Key’s tenure, with the managing director backing the former New Zealand captain to transform England into a consistent force at the top of the Test game. “Stephen Fleming is one of the most highly respected figures in cricket, and we are very fortunate that someone of his calibre is willing to take on the challenge of being the England Men’s Test head coach,” Key remarked.

Root’s return to captaincy marks an extraordinary twist after he previously admitted the role had become “very unhealthy” before stepping down in 2022 following a difficult spell in charge. Key believes circumstances have changed dramatically since then, suggesting the challenges of leading England during the Covid era had placed an exceptional burden on Root. “I am excited by the prospect of him working with Joe Root who will get the opportunity to lead free from the Covid restrictions that the Test team faced at the end of his first stint as captain,” Key added.

As the cricketing landscape shifts, Stokes’ potential return and the leadership changes herald a new chapter for English cricket, reminding fans and players alike of the unpredictable nature of the sport. A story yet to unfold.
