Emma Raducanu withdraws from US Open amid injury concerns
Emma Raducanu has announced her withdrawal from the US Open, citing an insufficient recovery from a stress fracture that previously sidelined her from Wimbledon, reports BritPanorama.
In a statement released through her team, it was confirmed that the 2021 US Open champion will not compete in New York. “After latest consultation with her team, Emma will have to miss the US Open,” the statement read.
While Raducanu is focused on rehabbing her injury, she is disappointed to miss a tournament that holds special significance for her. “While she is working hard to rehab her stress fracture, given the nature of the injury, it needs time to heal. She is sad to be missing a tournament that is so special to her,” the statement continued.
This latest setback represents another significant hurdle for the 23-year-old, whose 2026 season has been marred by injuries. Raducanu’s campaign was largely halted after she missed the entire clay-court season but made a brief return to grass, reaching the final at Queen’s Club prior to Wimbledon.
Former British No 1 Annabel Croft expressed sympathy for Raducanu, highlighting the recurring injury issues that have hindered her professional journey. “It feels as if she’s been unbelievably unlucky with the injury problems she’s faced throughout the course of her career,” Croft stated on Sky Sports Tennis, referencing the wrist surgery and foot problems that preceded this injury.
Croft noted that Raducanu’s promising performances at Queen’s seemed to signal a turning point in her career before this latest injury interrupted her momentum. “We were all so excited with what she did at Queen’s Club, where she reached the final just ahead of Wimbledon. She really ignited her tennis again, but this is just a major setback.”
There are discussions regarding whether Raducanu should consider ending her season prematurely to focus on a complete recovery rather than rushing back onto the circuit. “It wouldn’t be a surprise if she made that decision and probably that wouldn’t be such a bad decision to take because you can fully heal,” said Croft, although acknowledging that the allure of upcoming commercial engagements complicates such a choice.
Currently ranked world No 49, Raducanu risks losing valuable ranking points from her previous performances at the Cincinnati and US Open tournaments, raising concerns over her position in the WTA standings amid an ongoing injury. Despite this, Croft emphasized, “At the end of the day, your health is your wealth and that’s the most important factor.”
In a sport where resilience is paramount, Raducanu’s journey reflects a deeper narrative of patience and persistence, a reminder of the challenges that even the most promising talents face on their way to recovery.
