Allan Saint-Maximin leaves Club America amid racism allegations
Allan Saint-Maximin has parted ways with Club America through mutual agreement after the former Newcastle winger alleged his children were subjected to racist abuse in Mexico, reports BritPanorama.
The 28-year-old French attacker, a beloved figure during his four-year spell at St James’ Park from 2019 to 2023, made the disclosure earlier this week, asserting that his family faced targeted harassment.
His departure from the Mexican club follows a poignant message he shared on social media regarding the alleged incidents. Saint-Maximin had joined Club America in August, featuring 15 times for the side, contributing three goals and two assists before the abrupt end to his tenure.
In his Instagram post, he remarked, “The problem isn’t skin colour, it’s the colour of people’s thoughts.” While accustomed to personal attacks over his career, he stressed that targeting his children was beyond acceptable limits. “Protecting my children is my priority, and I will fight with all my might to ensure they are respected and loved, regardless of their background or skin colour,” he declared. “Hate and discrimination have no place in our society.”
Addressing those responsible directly, Saint-Maximin issued a stark warning: “To those who dared to attack my children, I say this: you made a mistake. I will always fight to protect my family, and there is no person or threat that will frighten me.” In response, Club America expressed full support for the player and his family, reaffirming their stance against discrimination and violence both on and off the field.
Head coach Andre Jardine lamented the loss of a player of Saint-Maximin’s quality, describing it as a “real shame” and wishing him the best in his future endeavours. Saint-Maximin had developed into a cult hero at Newcastle, making 124 appearances before transferring to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli in a deal valued at approximately £23 million in 2023.
Since leaving Tyneside, he has also had a spell at Turkish giants Fenerbahce before his move to Mexico last summer. Reports suggest that several English clubs expressed interest in his services upon news of his departure; however, a return to the Premier League seems unlikely at this stage.
The 28-year-old is now in advanced negotiations with French Ligue 1 side Lens, with discussions reportedly progressing throughout the day as he seeks to continue his career back in France. How he fares in his homeland remains to be seen.
