Mr Fishfinger enters Clacton by-election, vows to challenge Nigel Farage's resignation

Mr Fishfinger enters Clacton by-election race against Nigel Farage

A new candidate, Mr Fishfinger, has announced his participation in the upcoming Clacton by-election, challenging the Reform UK leader and former UKIP chief Nigel Farage, whose recent resignation as MP has been described as “codswallop,” reports BritPanorama.

Mr Fishfinger, who is 55 years old, aims to capture the attention of voters in the Essex seaside town. His campaign includes whimsical proposals such as replacing Admiral Nelson’s statue in Trafalgar Square with a statue of Captain Birdseye and altering the national anthem to “Cod Save the King.”

In an exclusive interview, Mr Fishfinger expressed confidence in his unique approach, claiming that locals would appreciate his campaign’s humorous twists. The by-election was triggered following Farage’s controversial resignation, which stemmed from an investigation regarding undisclosed donations he received prior to his election.

Addressing the competitive atmosphere, Mr Fishfinger remarked, “I look forward to watching Mr Farage argue with an 8ft-tall intergalactic space warrior shaped as a bin and a man dressed as a fish finger.” His candidacy coincides with the boycott of the election by all major political parties, which has heightened interest in alternative candidates.

Mr Fishfinger, whose real name is Paul Ellis, previously ran in a 2017 by-election against Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron. He adopted the unusual moniker after local residents suggested they would prefer a candidate called Mr Fishfinger over Mr Farron.

Currently employed as a site engineer in Doncaster, Mr Fishfinger requires ten nominations from Clacton residents to formally enter the race. He described his long absence from politics, stating, “I’ve been in the freezer for nearly a decade after my last by-election bid in Cumbria, but I’ve mullet over and I’m ready to land the big one.”

The ongoing scrutiny of Farage is of significant consequence, as he faces an ethics investigation over a £5 million gift from Thailand-based crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne and allegations of failing to disclose support from British financier George Cottrell, who has a history of legal issues in the US.

Farage, who won the Clacton seat in 2024, denies any wrongdoing and asserts that he will allow voters to be the judge of his actions in the forthcoming election.

Mr Farage’s unexpected resignation has stirred the political landscape, raising questions about the implications for local governance and party dynamics in the region. The subsequent candidacy of Mr Fishfinger adds a layer of intrigue and humour to the electoral contest, promising a lively by-election ahead.

The complexities of this electoral race, marked by Farage’s controversial past and the emergence of unconventional candidates, reflect the ever-evolving nature of British politics.

As political dynamics unfold in Clacton, the choice facing local voters could serve as a perception-shifting moment in the ongoing dialogue surrounding leadership and representation in their community.
