Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition showcases stunning cosmic imagery
The Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition, organized by the Royal Observatory Greenwich, has unveiled a selection of remarkable entries, showcasing the beauty of the universe through photography, reports BritPanorama.
This year, the competition attracted nearly 4,000 submissions from 769 photographers across 66 countries. Included in the entries are stunning photographs depicting auroras, galaxies, and the moon’s surface, each highlighting the intricate beauty of space and our planet.
Greg Brown, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory and a judge for the competition, noted that many images stand out for their technical excellence. One finalist, Tom Williams, presents a composite image titled “Mars in 2025,” which showcases multiple views of the planet throughout the year.
Another finalist, Rafael Schmall, captured an extraordinary image titled “The Savannah Tree.” This photo depicts a solar prominence emanating from the sun, visually resembling an acacia tree. Brown remarked on the striking nature of this image, describing it as immersive and evocative of the sun’s dynamic activity.
The competition, characterized by its blend of art and science, invites judges to select winners from nine categories, alongside two special prizes and an overall winner. Brown emphasized that impressive qualities often make decisions straightforward for the judging panel, with standout images making a clear impression.
The grand prize winner will receive £10,000 (approximately $13,300), while category winners will each receive £1,500 (about $2,000). The announcement of the winning images is scheduled for September 17, with an exhibition to be held at London’s National Maritime Museum, showcasing the top entries and short-listed works.
This year’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition not only celebrates the innovations in astrophotography but also enhances public appreciation of the cosmos, recognizing the artistic potential within scientific exploration.
