New musical 'Sinatra' portrays the icon's complexities and controversies in the West End

Sinatra’s legacy returns to the stage

The world of theatre has welcomed a long-awaited musical tribute to Frank Sinatra, presenting his life and career robustly in the West End, marking 28 years since the icon’s death, reports BritPanorama.

Fans of jukebox musicals have been eagerly anticipating this production, considering Sinatra’s absence from the trend that has dominated for decades. The narrative, penned by Joe DiPietro, explores Sinatra’s multifaceted persona, touching on his rise to fame, tumultuous relationships, and eventual redemption, culminating with his Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor in 1954 for From Here to Eternity.

DiPietro’s script does not shy away from the less savoury aspects of Sinatra’s character, delving into his notorious womanising and fiery temper. This portrayal seems particularly notable given the involvement of Sinatra’s estate and his daughter, Tina, as producers.

While many jukebox musicals focus solely on the hits, this production balances the beloved classics with a deeper exploration of Sinatra’s life. Joel Harper-Jackson delivers a commendable performance as the titular character, presenting the complexity of the man beyond just his musical legacy.

The show’s strong female characters significantly enrich the narrative. Sinatra’s wife, Nancy, portrayed by Phoebe Panaretos, showcases a blend of strength and vulnerability, while Ava Gardner, played by Ana Villafañe, adds a compelling dynamic to Sinatra’s journey. Jenna Russell shines as his mother, Dolly, providing both humor and grounding as the story unfolds.

Key musical moments are expertly woven throughout the production, with Sinatra’s powerful renditions of his classic songs punctuating pivotal moments in the narrative. The show concludes with the iconic ensemble performance of “New York, New York,” signifying the enduring impact of Sinatra’s legacy.

Sinatra the musical’ is at the Aldwych Theatre, London. Booking to 10 April ( sinatramusical.com ).
