PSG gains additional dressing room for Super Cup clash against Aston Villa
Paris Saint-Germain have been handed an additional dressing room for their Super Cup showdown with Aston Villa after raising concerns with UEFA over their original facilities, reports BritPanorama.
The Champions League holders were reportedly unhappy with the amount of space allocated to them at the Red Bull Arena ahead of Wednesday night’s eagerly awaited encounter in Austria. Unai Emery’s Villa have been given Red Bull Salzburg’s usual home dressing room for the match, while PSG were initially allocated the away facilities.
However, the French giants felt there was a significant difference between the amount of space available to the two teams. PSG officials subsequently raised the issue with UEFA during a pre-match meeting on Monday. The reigning European champions have argued that they should have access to roughly the same amount of dressing-room space as their Premier League opponents.
Their concerns have now resulted in UEFA finding a solution before the two sides battle for the first major piece of European silverware of the season. PSG have been allocated an additional spare dressing room, which is normally available for match officials. This means Luis Enrique and his players will have approximately the same amount of space as Villa, with no match officials displaced as a consequence of the arrangement.
PSG travel to Austria with a 20-man squad as they look to continue their extraordinary run of success on the European stage. The French side are also the defending Super Cup champions after overcoming Tottenham on penalties in last year’s final. Luis Enrique’s men then retained their Champions League crown in May, defeating Arsenal, solidifying their status as the dominant force in European football.
The French side will now attempt to add more silverware against a Villa side enjoying their own remarkable period under former PSG boss Emery. The Spaniard has transformed the Midlands club since taking charge and ended Villa’s three-decade wait for a major trophy by guiding them to Europa League glory, having defeated Freiburg in Istanbul to book their place in Wednesday’s Super Cup.
It will be Villa’s first appearance in the fixture since 1982, adding another chapter to their resurgence under Emery. Meanwhile, the last match between the two sides was a thriller, with Villa beating PSG 3-2 in the Champions League last year, though the Ligue 1 titans went through on aggregate.
