Chelsea fury over transfer collapse for Lamine Camara
Chelsea have expressed their frustration after a £47 million transfer for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara fell through on deadline day, reports BritPanorama.
Having believed that they had secured a full written agreement with Monaco for the Senegal international, who was set to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, the Blues were taken aback when they were informed shortly after the 11pm deadline that the transfer would not proceed.
Camara was ready to travel to London for a medical examination when Monaco abruptly rescinded their agreement. Chelsea has deemed this approach as highly unprofessional, as they were under the impression that all key details had been finalised.
The abrupt reversal was linked to simultaneous negotiations between Monaco and Everton regarding the sale of striker Folarin Balogun. Monaco ultimately concluded that they would only allow one of Camara or Balogun to leave, leading to a withdrawal from the agreement with Chelsea after they re-negotiated terms with Everton. Balogun later opted out of the transfer, concluding a chaotic transfer window for all involved.
The situation was further compounded for Chelsea as they could not revive their pursuit of Camara due to Monaco’s refusal to sign a deal sheet before the deadline elapsed. Sky Sports News journalist Kaveh Solhekol noted, “Chelsea don’t believe this is the way clubs should conduct business,” emphasising the disappointment over Monaco’s last-minute actions.
Camara had been seen as a possible replacement for Enzo Fernandez, who moved to Manchester City for a record-breaking £125 million on deadline day. While Chelsea maintained the option of cancelling Fernandez’s departure, they ultimately chose to honour their commitments to City and the Argentine midfielder.
No alternative midfield replacement could be secured in time, leaving Chelsea without a direct substitute for Fernandez. In the backdrop of this turmoil, goalkeeper Robert Sanchez joined Como on loan, signalling further movement at Stamford Bridge.
