Chelsea target Wijnaldum as midfield options dwindle

Chelsea have reached out to veteran Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum as they scramble to address a midfield shortage, reports BritPanorama.

The 35-year-old has been without a club since departing Al-Ettifaq in June and remains eligible to sign outside the transfer window. The Blues were left desperately thin in central midfield after selling Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City in a deal worth £125 million — a fee that equalled the British transfer record.

Chelsea had earmarked Monaco’s Lamine Camara as Fernandez’s replacement, but that move fell apart at the eleventh hour on deadline day. Now, Xabi Alonso’s side are turning to the free-agent market, with Wijnaldum emerging as a surprise target to fill the gap until at least January.

The Camara deal collapsed after Monaco chose to prioritise the sale of striker Folarin Balogun to Everton instead. However, Balogun ultimately turned down the Toffees’ approach despite having already visited their training facilities, meaning both he and Camara ended up staying at the Ligue 1 club.

This sequence of events left Chelsea furious, as the west London outfit was unable to secure a replacement before the window closed on Tuesday. Without a new central midfielder on the books, Alonso now faces a straightforward choice: rely on his existing options until the winter window opens, or dip into the pool of available free agents.

Wijnaldum built his reputation in English football across stints with Newcastle and Liverpool, racking up 217 top-flight appearances between the two clubs. At Anfield, he became a fan favourite, collecting Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup and Super Cup winners’ medals during a trophy-laden spell on Merseyside.

He surprised many at Liverpool when he rejected a contract extension to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in 2021. After two seasons in the French capital, he reunited with former Reds captain Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia.

The Netherlands international enjoyed a productive final campaign in the Gulf, scoring 17 goals in 34 matches last term. Despite that return, Al-Ettifaq opted against renewing his deal, leaving him without a club throughout the summer.

Alonso has made no secret of his desire to bring greater experience into the squad since taking charge at the start of the summer. Prior to this window, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Kalidou Koulibaly had arrived at Stamford Bridge aged over 30 since BlueCo assumed majority ownership in 2022. That changed with the summer additions of Danny Welbeck, 35, and former Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson, 36.

Wijnaldum’s extensive Premier League pedigree makes him an appealing option for Alonso. The club is prepared to table a short-term deal should personal terms prove agreeable. Chelsea were far from cautious with their spending over the summer window, with Morgan Rogers’ £117 million switch from Aston Villa standing as the club’s most expensive acquisition to date.

In a season marked by both overhauls and adjustments, Wijnaldum’s potential return might offer Chelsea a familiar face during turbulent times. How transfers reshape team dynamics often unveils deeper narratives surrounding club ambitions — a reminder that in football, the past and present are frequently intertwined.
