Scottie Scheffler comments on LIV players returning to the PGA Tour
Scottie Scheffler has offered his perspective regarding the participation of LIV players returning to the PGA Tour, a response prompted by Rory McIlroy’s critique of these players’ contributions to the breakaway league, reports BritPanorama.
McIlroy expressed skepticism about the value brought by LIV players, questioning, “I’d argue, have they brought value to LIV?” In contrast, Scheffler acknowledged his enthusiasm for competing against such players but suggested they ought to face “some sort of penalties.”
He remarked, “There’s definitely some players that would provide a lot of value to the Tour, and guys that I love competing against as well.” He added, “So I think going forward there obviously has to be, I think, some sort of penalties. What those are, I’ll let [PGA Tour CEO Brian] Rolapp and all those guys figure it out.”
Scheffler’s comments surface amid uncertainty regarding the future of LIV Golf, with the current week’s event in Indianapolis poised to be the last supported by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. LIV chief executive Scott O’Neil is expected to outline the next steps for the breakaway circuit, which is reportedly in discussions with a new lead investor and plans to reform its operational model. According to O’Neil, the ongoing deal will be critical in guiding the league into its next phase, “driven by and for the players.” However, lines of communication within the league have reportedly faltered, as the Team Championship event previously scheduled for the end of the month has been cancelled.
As this backdrop unfolds, the FedEx Cup remains a focal point, with the BMW Championship commencing today. Justin Thomas and Sahith Theegala are set to start first, while McIlroy aims to recover from a disappointing finish of 66th out of 68 in the previous week’s event, partnering with American Xander Schauffele following Robert MacIntyre’s withdrawal. Post-BMW Championship, the field will narrow down to 30 competitors for next week’s TOUR Championship, the climactic finale of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
It bears thinking that even among elite golfers, divisions are stark; a reminder, not merely of rivalries, but of the complex relationships that shape the sport today.
