Maresca reflects on City’s defeat to Arsenal in Community Shield
Enzo Maresca admitted there are “many things to work on” after Manchester City lost 3-0 to Arsenal in the Community Shield, reports BritPanorama.
City struggled throughout, going behind after just 23 seconds, unable to gain any sort of foothold in the match.
Despite making numerous changes, including substituting Erling Haaland seven minutes into the second half, his team could not match the performance level of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
Sharing his thoughts after the game, Maresca told the BBC: “I think the goal we conceded after 25 seconds unfortunately affected the game in that moment. I think after the goal, the reaction was quite good before they scored the second one.”
He mentioned that City created three or four opportunities to equalise but were hampered by conceding the second goal, complicating their efforts further. “We had three or four chances to score and draw the game, but unfortunately we conceded the second one, and it became more complicated,” Maresca stated.
Maresca expressed disappointment at the early goal, suggesting it set an uphill battle for his side. “In this kind of game the level is so similar that when you concede a goal, it then becomes difficult,” he explained.
Despite the setback, he remained positive about the attacking potential shown by his side. “After the first one, I was quite happy because we didn’t concede anything again, and we created three or four chances to draw the game. There is a mistake there, but it’s just the beginning,” he noted. He emphasised the importance of their upcoming match against Bournemouth in the Premier League, stating, “Then from next Sunday we start the Premier League, and then the focus has to be about that.”
Maresca took charge of City after Pep Guardiola’s departure following ten successful years at the helm. He acknowledged that improvements are necessary across multiple areas as the season progresses. “The season’s just started, so there are many things we need to do better, but even when we win games, there are things we need to do better,” he concluded.
As City gears up for their Premier League opener, the challenges are clear; for a manager finding his footing, those early lessons will be vital in shaping the trajectory of what’s to come.
