Nigel Farage wins special election in Clacton
LONDON — Nigel Farage beat trash-can wearing comic candidate Count Binface on Friday, regaining a seat in Parliament he quit a month ago to trigger the widely mocked special election, reports BritPanorama.
Farage, leader of the anti-immigration Reform UK party, who some see as a possible next prime minister, abruptly resigned his seat in July amid an investigation into whether he failed to report a £5 million ($6.7 million) gift from a cryptocurrency billionaire. He declared his intention to run for the vacated seat as a demonstration of voter support, ultimately winning with 63% of the vote, while Binface garnered about 27%. The by-election, notable for being held on one of the hottest days of the year, saw a turnout of 44%.
Binface, known for his satirical campaigns, became the default challenger among 34 candidates after major parties boycotted the election, labelling it a political stunt orchestrated by Farage. He ran on a humorous platform that included promises such as tax cuts and nationalising pop singer Adele.
Farage announced his victory shortly after the polls closed but avoided the official declaration ceremony where he would have shared the stage with the other contestants, many representing lighthearted or joke campaigns. He cited police warnings about an “organized campaign to disrupt and degrade the result” as a reason for his absence, although Essex police stated there was no credible threat to his safety.
Following his victory, Farage reaffirmed his strong support in the Clacton area, yet the future of his seat remains uncertain. An investigation previously suspended when he resigned is set to resume, which could lead to further complications regarding his parliamentary status. The Parliamentary standards watchdog is examining an undeclared donation to Farage, reportedly made in 2024, which he claims was a personal gift unrelated to political activities.
Upon stepping down, Farage referred to the scrutiny he faced as an “establishment hit job” and a product of a “media-driven witch-hunt.” Despite this, his recent win illustrates his continuing influence in the region, but it comes amid inquiries that have affected his popularity in broader, national polls.
Farage’s strategy of resignation to reposition himself as a candidate misfired, as other political parties’ refusal to participate left him against a multitude of smaller, independent contenders, including comedic figures. Binface’s performance was notable, marking his best showing across eight elections and allowing him to reclaim his £500 ($675) candidate deposit after surpassing the 5% vote threshold.
Dressed in a costume resembling something from low-budget science fiction, Binface is the alter-ego of Jon Harvey, a comedian intent on showcasing the humor in British democracy, where even the most prominent figures are not above critique — even if it comes from outer space.
