Cyclospora outbreak expands to four additional states, prompting federal investigation

Outbreak of cyclosporiasis reported across nine US states

Nine states are currently grappling with a surge in diarrheal illness linked to the cyclospora parasite, according to an official at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who chose to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the information, reports BritPanorama.

The outbreak has expanded to include four additional states—Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania—joining the initial states of Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. This cluster is under investigation by both federal and state health officials.

Health departments across these nine states have confirmed over 12,000 cases of cyclosporiasis reported this summer, with a significant concentration in Michigan. If confirmed, this outbreak may become one of the largest instances of foodborne illness in the US in the past thirty years.

Preliminary investigations, guided by interviews with affected patients, suggest that iceberg lettuce sourced from Central Mexico may be the probable cause of the outbreak. The US Food and Drug Administration and health authorities in Mexico are actively involved in determining the source of contamination.

In response to the outbreak, Taylor Farms has initiated a recall of shredded lettuce distributed to restaurants, food services, and retailers in 27 states.

The CDC has noted that cases of cyclosporiasis have surfaced in numerous states this summer. Investigations are ongoing into several clusters, though not all are necessarily linked to the same source.

This situation underscores the ongoing challenges posed by foodborne illnesses in the United States, highlighting the need for vigilance and proactive measures in public health.
