Ebola outbreak in Congo surpasses 3,000 deaths
Congo’s Ebola outbreak has killed more than 3,000 people out of over 6,100 confirmed cases, the latest government data showed Wednesday, as the disease is spreading at an unprecedented speed, faster than efforts to track and slow it, reports BritPanorama.
Data from Congo’s Ministry of Health indicated that the outbreak has recorded 6,186 confirmed cases, including 3,007 deaths since it was declared a global health emergency in mid-May. This situation marks the fastest-growing outbreak of Ebola ever detected.
In recent weeks, cases have surged, with two new health zones affected last week in North Kivu, where the fatality rate is significantly higher compared to the rest of the affected provinces. Currently, the virus has spread to six provinces.
Health workers face severe challenges and have staged strikes multiple times to demand payment, compounding the difficulties in managing the outbreak.
The rapid spread of the disease can be attributed to various factors, including ongoing conflict in eastern Congo, attacks on health workers, the movement of miners, and inadequate health infrastructure. Concerns have also been raised regarding the resumption of school in the middle of the outbreak and its potential role in transmission.
The World Health Organization has warned that the outbreak is poised to exceed the deadliest on record, which was West Africa’s outbreak between 2014 and 2016 that resulted in 11,000 fatalities. Furthermore, the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention has suggested that the actual number of cases could be three times larger than reported due to weaknesses in surveillance and contact tracing.
As of now, there is no vaccine or approved treatment for the rare Bundibugyo virus that has triggered the current outbreak; however, a couple of vaccines are under development. Last week, the government began distributing the Ervebo vaccine to frontline health workers in Kisangani in the northeastern Tshopo region. The WHO noted that Ervebo has previously assisted in combating Ebola outbreaks and may provide some level of protection.
The situation remains critical as efforts continue to address the public health challenge amidst significant logistical and human resource hurdles.
