Argentina players sing controversial anthem referencing Falkland Islands after dramatic World Cup win over Egypt

Argentina’s World Cup celebrations took a controversial turn after players were filmed singing a version of a famous supporters’ anthem containing a reference to the Falkland Islands following their dramatic victory over Egypt, reports BritPanorama.

Lionel Scaloni’s side appeared on the verge of a shocking elimination when they fell 2-0 behind in their last-16 tie in Atlanta. However, an extraordinary late comeback saw Cristian Romero spark the fightback before captain Lionel Messi levelled the score just four minutes later.

Enzo Fernandez then headed home deep into stoppage time, securing a remarkable 3-2 victory and booking Argentina’s place in the quarter-finals, where they will face Switzerland.

Following the final whistle, footage released by the Argentine Football Association showed the squad celebrating in the dressing room, singing “Muchachos,” the anthem that’s become synonymous with the national team in recent years. Adapted from the La Mosca track “Muchachos, esta noche me emborracho” by school teacher Fernando Romero, the song gained worldwide attention during Argentina’s successful 2022 World Cup campaign, with its lyrics updated for the 2026 tournament.

One notably controversial line references “Las Malvinas” — Argentina’s name for the Falkland Islands— alongside tributes to Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi. Players were heard singing in Spanish: “I am Argentine from cradle to grave, for the Malvinas, for Diego, for Leo’s final chapter.” The footage was shared on social media along with a caption encouraging fans to learn the lyrics.

The issue of the Falkland Islands remains politically sensitive, with Argentina asserting its claim over the territory, which has been under British administration since the 19th century, apart from the 1982 conflict following Argentina’s invasion. The sovereignty dispute continues to be a point of contention between the countries.

As Argentina celebrates, attention has shifted toward the possibility of a World Cup semi-final matchup against England. Fans have been seen chanting about this potential meeting, reiterating a refrain suggesting English apprehension towards the Argentine squad. Videos circulating on social media included lyrics taunting England, while congregations of supporters gathered in Buenos Aires to revel in their team’s success.

Before any clash can take place, both nations must first navigate challenging quarter-finals, with England facing Norway on Saturday and Argentina taking on Switzerland. The fierce rivalry, especially in World Cup contexts, is storied, with each country generating memorable encounters across decades. As anticipation builds, it remains to be seen whether football will echo the intensity of past conflicts, serving as a reminder of the fierce competitive spirit that defines it.

In a tournament brimming with tension and excitement, the stages are set, yet the outcome remains tantalisingly uncertain, proving once again that in football, the stakes are as much about pride as they are about victory.
