Arthur Fery reaches Wimbledon quarter-finals with stunning victory over Grigor Dimitrov
Arthur Fery has written himself into the history books with a stunning Wimbledon quarter-final triumph over Grigor Dimitrov on Centre Court. The 23-year-old, ranked 114th in the world, became the first British wildcard ever to reach the last eight of a Grand Slam in the Open Era, reports BritPanorama.
The match was an absolute thriller, with Fery battling past the Bulgarian veteran 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-7) in a five-set epic. Dimitrov, a former world number three who reached the semi-finals at SW19 back in 2014, simply couldn’t put away Britain’s last remaining singles hope.
Fery had never made it past the second round at a major before this remarkable fortnight. The drama escalated in the fourth set when Dimitrov twice broke Fery’s serve to take the lead. However, the young Brit, playing on Wimbledon’s biggest stage just a stone’s throw from where he grew up, refused to buckle.
Fery fought back both times and eventually forced a deciding set, leaping into the air with joy. The atmosphere was electric, with Roger Federer among those gripped in the Royal Box. Fery held his nerve brilliantly to secure the match, winning the final tie-break 10-7 and clinching the biggest victory of his career.
At match point, he stood with hands on hips, shaking his head in disbelief as the crowd erupted. Fery’s extraordinary run means he’ll climb inside the ATP top 100 for the first time in his career. He is now just the sixth British player in the Open era to reach the Wimbledon men’s singles quarter-finals and the lowest-ranked player to make the last eight at the Championships in 12 years.
Dimitrov, aged 35, was hoping to finally reach the quarters after his bid last year ended in heartbreak when he retired injured while leading eventual champion Jannik Sinner by two sets. Nonetheless, Fery never wavered under the mounting pressure.
Next up for Britain’s new hero is Italian ninth seed Flavio Cobolli, with a semi-final spot on the line on Wednesday. As the tournament progresses, one can’t help but wonder if Fery can continue this remarkable journey, serving as a reminder of how tennis can unveil unexpected talents at the most prestigious of venues.
