With forecasts predicting temperatures exceeding 38°C, high humidity could push the “feels like” temperature to approximately 46°C at the open-air venue where the match is scheduled. This extreme heat has led to intensified scrutiny of tournament organisers ahead of the knockout fixture on Saturday.
Experts are warning that these conditions present severe risks not just for the players but also for the thousands of fans and stadium workers who will be exposed to dangerous temperatures for hours. Bharat Venkat, director of the Heat Lab at the University of California, stated, “When you’re exerting yourself on a particularly hot day, the likelihood of experiencing heat-related illness or even death is much higher.”
In response to the rising heat concerns, FIFA is expected to implement a series of measures such as mandatory cooling breaks, shaded areas, and additional heat-management protocols. However, these precautions have faced criticism from players’ union FIFPRO and various medical specialists, who argue for the possibility of delaying or even postponing the matches if conditions remain unsafe.
Current FIFA guidelines allow for postponements based on temperature thresholds, raising the prospect of a last-minute decision if forecasts do not improve. Earlier in the tournament, players in another match also battled high temperatures, using pitch sprinklers to cool down as the mercury rose beyond 32°C.
Questions remain regarding FIFA’s heat policies, with some experts suggesting they are inadequate for a tournament taking place in the summer across North America. France’s match is not the only one impacted; England’s upcoming last-16 fixture is also facing uncertainty due to potential weather-related rescheduling.
