Rory McIlroy reflects on missed PGA Championship opportunity as Aaron Rai claims victory

Rory McIlroy expressed regret over his narrow miss at the PGA Championship, stating he will be left wondering what could have been, while praising Aaron Rai as a deserving champion, reports BritPanorama.

Competing at Aronimink Golf Club, McIlroy faced a challenging start with a four-over-par 74, placing him further down the leaderboard after the opening round. However, he rebounded impressively, shooting rounds of 67 and 66 to regain his competitive edge ahead of the final round on Sunday.

Despite a closing round of 69, which positioned him tied for seventh at four under par, McIlroy finished five strokes adrift of Rai. The English golfer made history with a sensational closing 65, becoming the first Englishman to win the tournament since Jim Barnes in 1919.

Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy noted the key moments that cost him the chance to lift the Wanamaker Trophy. “Look, proud,” he stated, acknowledging the efforts he put in after his rocky start. He remarked on the difficulties presented by the conditions on Sunday, yet felt he played well enough to compete at the top level.

“It’s just there were three holes that I’ll rue – not birdieing the two par fives, and then making bogey at the drivable par four, 13,” McIlroy explained. He recognised that even with an improved scorecard, Rai’s superb play could have made victory impossible for him. “Those three holes are what cost me a chance to win the tournament today,” he added.

Despite his disappointment, McIlroy showed genuine happiness for Rai, stating, “There won’t be a more popular winner this year, I would say.” Rai, who turned in a strong finish after a shaky start to his final round, delivered a remarkable performance that included an eagle at the ninth and a stunning 68-foot birdie putt on the 17th.

As Rai celebrated his victory by acknowledging support from his wife, Gaurika Bishnoi, the new champion’s casual and humble approach resonated with fans, exemplifying the spirit of the competition.

In the world of sport, such twists and turns remind us that even the most celebrated athletes grapple with missed opportunities and the unpredictable nature of the game. McIlroy’s journey through the tournament highlights both the pressure of high expectations and the resilience needed to navigate them in pursuit of glory.
