Nigel Farage announces resignation and seeks re-election

LONDON — Nigel Farage, a British right-wing leader and staunch ally of President Donald Trump, said Tuesday he would be resigning his political seat and re-running in a move that shocked the nation and appeared to be an attempt to save his political career, reports BritPanorama.

Farage, noting that he had “plenty of offers” for work in the United States, announced at a news conference that he would re-run for his parliamentary seat in Clacton in southeast England, triggering a local election.

“I will fight to win,” he declared, describing the vote as “a people versus the establishment by-election.” His decision to stand for reelection came amid increasing political pressure to step down and an investigation by a parliamentary standards committee regarding donations received prior to his election, including more than $6 million from a crypto billionaire.

With this announcement, Farage appears to be making a defiant move to overcome recent political turmoil and consolidate his popularity. In recent months, he has emerged as a prominent figure with his hard-right Reform UK party topping polls amid widespread public discontent with the U.K.’s economy and traditional political parties.

Farage was instrumental in the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union in 2016 and has since positioned himself as one of the most influential politicians in modern British history, building a global brand around his anti-immigration stance. He stated Tuesday that his re-running for a seat he won in 2024 was influenced by a “pile on” of political pressure and what he called the “demonization” by the British press.

“Making money is not a crime,” he asserted. “I’ve done nothing wrong. I have not broken the law. I have not misused public money,” he added.

Surrounded by British flags, Farage expressed his anger, noting he would likely need funds for “security for the rest of my life,” citing his status as one of the most attacked politicians in decades.

After years as a political provocateur, Farage was finally elected as a member of parliament in 2024, representing Clacton, a deprived area of Essex in southeast England. He mentioned enjoying his time in parliament, despite facing criticism for low attendance and allegations that he spent substantial time in the U.S. or on media platforms, claims he has denied.

His populist Reform UK party has gained traction, disrupting the traditional dominance of Labour and the Conservatives. Earlier this year, Reform dealt a significant blow to the ruling Labour Party in local elections, contributing to the downfall of then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Despite his rising political fortunes, Farage has faced intensified scrutiny over his finances. Reports have surfaced regarding a $6 million gift from a crypto billionaire and links to an aide named George Cottrell, who has faced legal issues in the past.

Farage has denied any wrongdoing, insisting he has followed all rules. The ongoing revelations have raised questions about his financial dealings as he prepares for this new electoral challenge.

As for the timing of the upcoming election, details remain uncertain.
