Trump signs order to rename Lake Ontario amid trade tensions with Canada
President Donald Trump signed an order to rename Lake Ontario along the U.S.-Canada border as “Lake America,” reflecting escalating tensions in his ongoing trade war with Ottawa, reports BritPanorama.
The directive, issued on Thursday, instructed federal agencies to officially adopt the new name in all records, echoing a previous attempt by Trump to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” While he has the authority to implement such changes within the U.S., he cannot compel Canada or its citizens to recognize his naming preferences.
The decision appears largely aimed at rallying his political base, which has grown increasingly disillusioned with his presidency and perceived failures to address rising living costs since he took office nearly two years ago. Trump’s approach has included antagonizing American allies, seemingly stemming from his belief that these nations should yield to U.S. interests.
During the signing in the Oval Office, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Canada for what he termed its failure to contribute financially to U.S. military support. “You know, we defend Canada for nothing. We don’t get anything,” he stated, citing a lack of financial compensation for U.S. military assistance and criticizing Canada’s treatment of the relationship as one of entitlement.
Trump further declared that the longstanding issues with Canada had persisted “for decades” and needed resolution. He specifically pointed to the automobile industry as a sector that he believes should be fully re-shored to the U.S.
Confronted about his harsh stance on Canada, especially while engaging constructively with autocratic leaders in China and North Korea, Trump accused Canadian officials of mistreating the U.S. “The Canadian officials have treated us very badly — they’re nasty people,” he remarked, echoing sentiments from earlier in his term that Canada was “the worst to deal with on trade.”
His comments came following the latest round of trade disputes, where Canada retaliated against U.S. tariffs. Trump had previously hinted at the renaming in a TikTok video, where he presented a map illustrating his plan.
“We’re gonna make a little change; we’re gonna call it something different than Lake Ontario,” Trump stated in the clip. “All it takes is a good pen and some intelligence.” In that video, he also used a Sharpie to mark the alteration on the map.
This latest episode in U.S.-Canada relations comes at a time when Canadian military leaders are reportedly modeling responses to potential U.S. aggression for the first time in over a century, according to The Globe and Mail. Trump has also exhibited an ongoing interest in acquiring Canadian territory, labeling it the “51st state,” while concurrently expressing ambitions to control Greenland, framing that desire as a matter of national security.
With relations further strained, the question arises: how will both nations navigate these turbulent waters ahead?
