Israeli military expands operations in southern Lebanon
The Israeli military has released a new map indicating its operations have extended several kilometres into southern Lebanon, specifically near the Hezbollah stronghold of Nabatieh, north of the Litani River, reports BritPanorama.
Israeli troops have been active in these areas for several weeks. However, the recent map marks a significant update, depicting the territory in dark red as the “security zone in which IDF (Israel Defense Forces) soldiers are operating in southern Lebanon.”
This expansion comes amid rising tensions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump, as the latter seeks to navigate a controversial pact with Iran. The recent agreement, signed by Iran and the U.S., has incited criticism from Israeli officials who believe it fails to sufficiently address concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions and may hinder military operations in Lebanon.
Trump has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with Netanyahu, condemning the Israeli military’s approach, particularly the destruction of civilian buildings in efforts to target Hezbollah militants. Israeli officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, have asserted that the military presence in Lebanon is non-negotiable.
One official noted that the outcome of current discussions could change if Trump chooses to leverage repercussions against Israel should it fail to adhere to the negotiated terms of the Iran deal. Nonetheless, there is little indication that Trump’s disapproval will lead to significant pressure, such as withholding military support.
Israel’s strategy includes maintaining “buffer zones” as a core part of its security policy. Analysts have suggested that the Iran pact may offer Israel some flexibility, yet it explicitly acknowledges the need for adherence to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon. Jonathan Rynhold, a senior researcher at Israel’s Bar-Ilan University, indicated that the terms imply an obligation for Israel to withdraw while simultaneously preventing Hezbollah from retaining weaponry.
The complexities of the Israeli-Lebanese conflict continue to unfold, with strategic military decisions weighed against diplomatic pressures and regional stability.
