Trade tensions rise as Europe faces heat wave
Trade tensions between China and Europe are heating up, as the continent grapples with its worst heat wave on record, prompting a surge in demand for air conditioners, reports BritPanorama.
Recent record temperatures have sparked a significant rush for air conditioning units across Europe, where only about 20% of the population owns one, compared to approximately 90% in the United States. The World Meteorological Organization attributes the extreme weather to climate change, noting that Europe is warming at twice the global average.
Chinese manufacturers play a pivotal role, supplying around 40% of the world’s air conditioner exports. This dependency underscores challenges for the European Union, which has been striving to maintain a balanced trade relationship with Beijing amid a growing trade deficit.
Alicia García-Herrero, chief economist for Asia-Pacific at Natixis, pointed out Europe’s vulnerability, stating, “Every time we have a shock, it’s China kind of ‘saving us,’ or that’s China’s narrative. So our position is very weak.” Meanwhile, Chinese media has highlighted Europe’s continued reliance on Chinese goods, stirring up debate about the continent’s economic strategy.
The EU has claimed that China is flooding its markets with low-cost goods and has threatened protective measures in response. In a joint statement, EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Wentao, expressed the need to balance trade and address market access issues.
Sefcovic noted, “China’s exports to the E.U. keep rising, while our market share in China keeps shrinking. This trend is not sustainable,” emphasizing the $412 billion trade gap. The EU has recently implemented a flat 3 euro customs duty aimed at curbing the influx of lower-priced Chinese products.
Chinese firms, including Midea, are actively adapting their air conditioning systems to meet European standards, despite traditionally high installation costs and regulatory hurdles. Midea reported a sales increase of over 70% in key European markets compared to 2024.
With Chinese manufacturers working diligently to meet the soaring demand, Midea has shipped 200,000 units to Europe this year, reflecting a transformation in consumer preferences influenced by the unprecedented heat wave.
According to Joybuy, a subsidiary of JD.com, sales of air conditioning products surged nearly 40-fold in early July compared to just a month prior. Despite their technological adaptability and competitive pricing, the reliance on Chinese air conditioning units highlights the complexities of trade dynamics amid climatic challenges.
As both regions navigate this high-stakes situation, the broader implications for trade policy and environmental responses remain to be seen, leaving observers attentive to how European nations will articulate their energy strategies moving forward. Issues surrounding dependency and trade balance linger, particularly as sweltering conditions persist across both China and Europe.
