Trump’s “Lake America” campaign intensifies as tensions rise with Canada
President Donald Trump recently shared an AI-generated video portraying an army of heavily-armed “Donald Ducks” patrolling the shores of “Lake America,” following his announcement to rename Lake Ontario amid ongoing trade tensions with Canada, reports BritPanorama.
Hours later, Trump posted another video from his Virginia golf course, in which he knocks over a “Welcome to Lake Ontario” sign and replaces it with a “Welcome to Lake America” sign, dancing to the Village People’s “YMCA.” These posts come in the wake of Trump’s executive order renaming Lake Ontario during a contentious period of tariffs between the two neighbouring countries.
The initial video, paired with the theme from Hawaii Five-O, depicts a group of Canada geese marching near the Great Lake, armed and bearing Trump’s distinct hairstyle. As they fire into the air, fireworks illuminate a skyline reminiscent of Toronto.
Earlier in the week, Trump had expressed that the U.S. was giving “serious consideration” to the rebranding of Lake Ontario, which borders the U.S. and Canada. He had even posted a TikTok video showing himself using a Sharpie on a map of the lake. “We’re gonna make a little change; we’re gonna call it something different than Lake Ontario,” he remarked in the clip.
Trump’s efforts to rename the lake were formalized when he signed an executive order instructing federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America” in official documents, similar to his previous attempt to rebrand the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” However, the president cannot compel other jurisdictions—foreign nations, private entities, or even U.S. states—to adopt his naming directive.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed Trump’s announcement in a post on X, highlighting the historical significance of the name “Lake Ontario,” which originates from the Wendat language and means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big.” He emphasized that the name pre-dates both Canada’s Confederation and the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
Relations between the U.S. and Canada have grown strained since Trump assumed office, particularly over trade issues. On August 22, the U.S. imposed 50 percent tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian exports after negotiations broke down. The Trump administration accused Canada of unfair business practices, which Carney has denied, calling the tariffs an “act of war.”
In retaliation, Carney announced tariffs of up to 50 percent on a variety of U.S. goods, escalating the ongoing trade conflict. The war of words intensified this week when Trump criticized Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Truth Social, labeling him a “flunky” who needs to “fall in line.”
Ford responded at a news conference by denouncing Trump as a “dictator” and a “bully,” asserting that the president should “kiss my a**.”
This confrontation underscores the deepening rift between the U.S. and Canada as both nations grapple with the implications of Trump’s divisive policies and remarks.
