Chelsea edges past Fulham in Premier League opener
Xabi Alonso secured his first Premier League victory as Chelsea manager on Sunday, as the team triumphed 3-2 against Fulham despite a series of errors from goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, reports BritPanorama.

In light of this, Alonso publicly supported his goalkeeper, stressing that the team’s issues could not be attributed to one individual. “It’s about the team, it’s not about the individual,” Alonso stated. “The first goal, we can do better to defend, we can do better to avoid, but it’s part of the game. We need to accept and to learn.”
Alonso acknowledged the importance of continuing to improve across all positions, stating, “This is going to be a process. All the lines, from the strikers, the midfielders, the defence, the goalkeepers, we want to do better in everything.” Team cohesion will be paramount as Chelsea looks to build on their initial victory.
Although concerns linger over Sánchez’s performance, Chelsea remains optimistic about their goalkeeping options. The club continues to back Sanchez, while Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders, 21, serves as his deputy.
Fulham’s new signings may have added depth, but manager Alvaro Arbeloa expressed frustration over the timing of the goals his team conceded. “We conceded goals in the first minute, at the end of the first half and at the beginning of the second half. There are not worse moments to concede,” he noted.
Despite the defeat, Arbeloa praised his team’s character, stating, “We showed character and personality, and I am very proud of how my players responded.”
